Writing the CV for the sales assistant role
Start your CV with the shop or channel where you worked and the type of products. Then put your sales results, if you have figures. That way the reader sees in the first lines what you sold and how well it went.
In this role you advise customers, operate the till and reach sales targets. The range, the till system and your weekend availability are concrete points you can name. Make them visible in your work experience.
What you do in this role
The work consists of helping customers with their choices, operating the till and processing returns. You also keep the shelves or the window display in line with the merchandising plan, and count the stock. On a busy day you keep the overview together with your colleagues.
Keep the CV to one or two pages.
How your CV matches the advert
Read the advert and note the range, the till system and the availability. Say in your CV which of those points you already have, and name the shop and the type of products for each role. That makes it easy for the reader to see whether your experience fits.
Selling is about customer advice and closing a purchase. Describe in your CV one customer or one situation in which you helped a hesitant customer choose and completed the sale. That shows how you work, without needing to give a percentage.
Check the names of brands, shops and systems. Read your CV aloud and cut general phrases such as “customer-focused”. A short CV with the range, the till system and one concrete example is stronger than a long list of qualities.
A good sales assistant knows the stock and what is on the shelf. Describe in your CV how you checked the stock and informed customers when an item was not in stock. That shows you know the shop, and not only the till.
Customers come back when the advice was right. Describe in your CV how you provided aftercare, such as passing on a maintenance tip or helping with an exchange. That shows you look beyond the sale of a single product.
A shop changes by season, and a sales assistant must be able to explain the range accordingly. Describe in your CV how you advised customers on new collections or products, and how you kept your knowledge of the range up to date. That shows you keep pace with the shop, not only with the customer in front of you.
