Writing the CV for the content marketer role

Start your CV with the type of content you made and the channels you made it for. Put a link to your portfolio in the first lines, if you have one. That way the reader sees straight away what you made.

In this role you write, plan and measure content. The type of content, the tools and the results are points you can name concretely. A portfolio link and a measurable result make that clear at a glance.

What you do in this role

A content marketer draws up the editorial plan, writes and proofreads texts, and publishes in the CMS. The marketer also researches keywords, tracks results in Google Analytics and reports to the team. Working with designers and product managers is part of the role.

Keep the CV to one or two pages.

How your CV matches the advert

Read the advert and note the type of content, the tools and the channels the company uses. In your CV, say which of those points you already applied in practice, with a link to sample work if you can share it. A marketer who shows the work makes it easy for the reader.

Making content is a chain: choosing a topic, writing, publishing and measuring. Describe in your CV one project in which you went through that chain, with the target audience, the goal and what you measured. That way the CV does not stop at the word content, but shows how you work.

Check the links, the names of tools and the titles of your work. Read your CV aloud and cut every term you could not explain. A short CV with one strong project and a working link is stronger than a CV with many tools.

An editorial plan helps you finish topics on time and keep articles consistent with each other. Describe in your CV how you kept that plan and how you aligned with editors or designers. That shows you control the process.

A text starts with a clear question the reader has. Describe in your CV how you identified that question for the audience, for example through keyword research or questions from customers. That shows how you get from topic to content.

Content sometimes needs updating when the information is no longer correct. Describe in your CV how you checked and updated existing articles, and how you aligned that with the team. That shows you oversee the whole content library, not only new publications.

Which layout suits the content marketer CV

Choose one column, clear headings and a standard font. Tables and text boxes can cause errors when software reads a CV.

Put your work at the top, with a link to your portfolio or a sample article. Use a modern single-column layout with generous white space. Keep it uncluttered, so the content shows the work.

The example on this page uses a more eye-catching layout. Applying through an applicant tracking system? Then choose a template with one column and the ATS label.

Save your CV as a PDF with a recognisable file name, such as firstname-surname-cv.pdf.

What to put on the content marketer CV

Every CV contains at least your contact details, your work experience with dates, your education and certificates, and your skills and languages.

Name your tools, such as Google Analytics 4, a CMS, an email tool and an SEO tool. Describe the type of content you made, such as blogs, whitepapers, newsletters or social media posts, with the target audience. Mention your SEO knowledge and your results in traffic or sign-ups. Add your certification, for example Google Ads, and your language level.

Put your name at the top, with your town, email address and phone number. Your citizen service number (BSN), date of birth or marital status do not need to be on your CV.

Profile text: example (good and weak)

Below are two profile texts for the content marketer, both written for a fictional person. You can copy the structure.

Content marketer with five years of experience in B2B software. I come up with and write articles, webinars and newsletters that generate leads. I work with SEO research, analytics and a fixed editorial calendar. I am looking for a team in which I can steer content myself, from idea to measurement.
Content marketer with six years of experience in B2B marketing for software and business services. I write articles and newsletters, build the content plan and measure the results in Google Analytics 4. I worked on an SEO strategy that doubled organic traffic within eighteen months. I am looking for a team in which content and data drive growth together.

The first example names the sector, the content and the tools. The second names the years, the result and the audience. The weak version names no work and no result. A measurable result makes the profile text concrete.

Weak version: “I am a creative content marketer who enjoys writing, is always curious and gets the best out of every project.”

A profile text is short: four or five sentences. Write in the first person and say what you do, what you are good at and what you are looking for.

Making your work experience stand out

The example bullet points below belong to a fictional example CV. The figures are illustrative: use only your own figures, and only if they are accurate.

Start each bullet with an action word and state the result, not only the task.

  • Two blog articles a week written on software and working processes, following a fixed editorial plan.
  • Monthly newsletter set up: segmentation, topics and an A/B test on the subject line.
  • Keyword research per article, with titles and metadata optimised.
  • Results measured in Google Analytics 4 and reported monthly to the marketing team.
  • A whitepaper created with the designer and the product manager, which generated 400 downloads in the first month.
  • Freelance writer and editor directed, with a fixed review round for every article.

For each job, give the job title, employer, place and period, and put your current job at the top.

No work experience?

Have little experience as a content marketer yet? Your own blog, a placement at a marketing agency or running a social media account for an association counts. Show what you made, for whom and what it achieved, even if it was small. Include a link to your work.

Action words for your CV

Action words make your work concrete. A few that work well on a CV:

  • Organised
  • Supervised
  • Improved
  • Monitored
  • Planned
  • Recorded
  • Consulted
  • Delivered
  • Coordinated
  • Ensured

Use each word only once per job, and only if it matches your work.

Education on your CV

An hbo (higher professional education) course in communication, marketing or journalism suits this role. Name a minor or specialisation in content or digital marketing in the same section. Add a short course in SEO or copywriting, with the institution and the year.

List older education more briefly, so that recent work gets more space.

Skills on the content marketer CV

Hard skills

  • SEO and content strategy
  • Google Analytics 4
  • Copywriting
  • HubSpot

Soft skills

  • Writing in a clear, brand-led tone
  • Working together with designers and product managers
  • Setting priorities in a full content plan
  • Acting on feedback without losing the work
  • Being curious about data and audiences

Show collaboration with a project in which you acted on feedback from a product manager and the result was measurable. That shows how you work, not only what you can do.

Choose five to eight hard skills that you currently use.

Give an example from your work for SEO and content strategy, Google Analytics 4, Copywriting and HubSpot.

Certificates, languages and hobbies

For content marketing, certificates that prove a method are relevant, such as Google Ads or Google Analytics. State the name, the year and the issuer. A course in SEO, copywriting or content strategy goes in too. A HubSpot certification is listed with its version. Only put certificates on your CV that you actively use.

Put a certificate on your CV if it fits the role.

  • Google Ads certification (Google, 2021)

Languages in this example: Dutch (moedertaal), English (vloeiend).

Example content marketer CV

This is how the example looks in a real template. It is a starting point: take over the structure, not the text.

The fictional candidate is called Mila Vermeulen and lives in Eindhoven. The example carries the headline: Content marketer · B2B and SaaS.

Common mistakes on the content marketer CV

  • Only saying you “made content”, without the type, the channel and the audience.
  • Not naming a result. Traffic, sign-ups or downloads are more concrete than “good reach”.
  • Forgetting a portfolio link, or including a link to an outdated website.
  • Naming every tool you know, including tools you never really used.
  • A long list of SEO terms without an example of an article.

Test every link in your CV before you send it. A dead link to a portfolio is a missed opportunity in marketing.

Key points

  • Put a measurable result beside your main project, such as more visitors, more sign-ups or more downloads.
  • Show a link to your portfolio or a sample article, with the topic and the year.
  • Name the tools you used daily, such as Google Analytics 4 or a CMS, and what you did with them.
  • Describe your writing sample in one sentence: the topic, the audience and the goal of the article.

Read your CV aloud before you send it.
